A CEDA Dreding Conference

Dredging and Sustainability - How wide is the Gulf?

Technical visit: Pearl Qatar - Wednesday, 7th May, 1345 - 1800 hrs

May 6 - 7 2008, The Qatar International Exhibition Centre, Doha, Qatar.

Qatar’s first international real estate venture and the largest of its kind in the country is The Pearl-Qatar project, a man-made island located 350 metres offshore of Doha. The almost 4 million square meters of reclaimed land will create over 32 kilometers of new coastline. To put the size of the project into a European perspective, the entire development covers an area two-thirds of the size of Gibraltar. The Pearl-Qatar will house more than 41,000 residents when it has been completed in 2011.

The island was constructed by raising the land level to a height of 3 meters above mean sea-level. It was carved in hard rock to create a shape that would not only be aesthetically pleasing but also maintains conditions for excellent wave flow and water circulation. Through additional dredging, three beautiful coves were created plus approach channels with adequate depth for safe navigation within the coves and around the island.

The development has been undertaken with the greatest respect for the existing topography and marine environment. A stringent Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project has guaranteed that all construction has been done in an environmentally sensitive way. The developers claim that a diverse marine habitat is being created that will have a positive effect on bird life and the marine environment

Technical visit participants will get a tour of the construction site, learn about the bold execution methodology chosen by the Contractor to build the island on an existing shallow area, a former pearl bank which the island’s name comes from.

The coach will depart from the Qatar International Exhibition Centre at 1345 hrs and will return to the Ritz Carlton hotel at approximately 1800. Please check the conference web site for up to date information.

The technical visit is sponsored by MEDCO – Middle East Dredging Company.
